If you are looking for a quick and easy hike that has both beautiful scenery and a waterfall, look no further than Likeke Falls. This out and back style trail is easy enough for the youngest hikers to tackle, but packs a huge punch on natural beauty.
Why Choose Likeke Over Others Falls
This is definitely not the only easy trail on O’ahu that will take you to a waterfall. Each hike is unique and has it’s own beautiful views, but Likeke Falls ranks at the top of my list because it is not as heavily trafficked as the others. You don’t have to worry about constantly stepping aside for other people to pass if you have younger hikers with you. You also get spectacular views of the Ko’olau mountains which is one of my favorite places on the island.
Things To Consider Before Arriving
Like most hikes on island, Likeke Falls is muddy and full of mosquitoes. This hike will be less than desirable without bug spray so don’t forget to add it to your hiking pack. Although there is a great deal of tree coverage, it’s always smart to pack sunscreen just in case.
If you plan on going somewhere nice afterward or want to keep the rental car clean, I would recommend bringing an extra pair of shoes for everyone and clothes for the littles. It’s also handy to bring a pack of baby wipes to get the mud off of legs and arms. If you really want to go the extra mile to keep the car clean, pack a few plastic bags to stick used wipes and muddy shoes in.
Getting To The Trail
There are several trailheads that lead to Likeke falls. If you are going sans kids or are looking for more of a challenge, alltrails.com has directions to two of the moderately rated trails. If you are looking for an easier route, however, there is a third option.
At the Ko’olau Golf Club in Kaneohe there is a trailhead toward the back left of the parking lot. When you see the yellow gate, you will know you’ve arrived. Follow the trail behind the gate and just before you approach the large concrete cylinders pictured above, there’s a trail that branches off toward the left that will take you to the falls.
On the trail
For the most part, the trail to the falls is a gradual incline that is easy to navigate. Head straight up until you reach the tree with the carvings on it then turn right to head for the falls. Some parts are steeper and after a rainy day can become extra challenging for little legs due to mud. Even with a few muddy patches, it took our group of three 2 year olds, a 5 year old, and two adults about 40 minutes round trip.
This trail is pretty well shaded so even if it’s a hot, sunny day, it won’t be too unbearable if you go for an afternoon hike. The variety of trees and plant species along the way make for a pleasant walk up to the main attraction. Once at the falls, you will find several picture perfect spots so make sure your phone or camera is charged and ready to go.
Whether you are currently living on O’ahu or plan on visiting soon, Likeke Falls should definitely be on your to hike with the kids list. It’s a short and sweet trail that is sure to keep the kids entertained. The waterfall itself is magnificent and makes all of the muddy shoes and mosquitoes worth trekking through.
